Shalu Monastery in India
The once renowned Shalu Monastery and Bhulug Spiritual Lineage tradition founded by Omniscient Buton Rinchen Drubis on the verge of extinction in Tibet.
Shalu Monastery in Paonta Sahib
Only a few monks have escaped to India in recent times. They have joined Drepung Monastic College of the main Gelug Monastic Universities based in South India.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama has taken a strong personal interest in rehabilitating and reviving this important Lineage tradition in exile.
Therefore, in the year 2005, with the support and blessing of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, Shalu monastery was founded at the Tibetan settlement, Bhuppur, Paonta Sahib, Distt.Sirmour,(H.P.) India. The new Shalu monastery was made possible with kind financial assistance from the Private Office of H.H. the XIV Dalai Lama, and the new monastery was consecrated by Sakya Trichen Rinpoche.
Shalu Monks
Currently we have 55 young children who were ordained as monks. They are receiving traditional monastic training and education while attending the local Tibetan Settlement School. While most of the elder monks are still in Drepung Monastic University in South India completing their higher education, they occasionally visit and stay for some time at the Monastery in Poanta Sahib which is now the main seat of ‘Shalu Tradition’.
