Monastic Education
Young monks studying
Novice monks begin their education with the subjects of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history. Upon learning to read and write, they begin their formal preliminary studies of philosophy and scripture. In preparation for studying the major scriptures, the monks study various preparation texts such as the three collected topics. After completing these preparatory studies, the monks then move on to study the 5 major texts.
When learning a subject, the first step for a monk is to memorize the text he is learning. This will give him the mental flexibility to refer to the text in analysis and debate without hesitation. The next step is for the teacher to expound and elucidate the meaning of text to the student. These statements are then challenged again and again in debate with their fellow students. This system of debating refines the students understanding of the texts through dispelling misconceptions and misunderstandings, which results in the student having a clear understanding of the essential points.
